Hiking Edgewood:Western Bluebird Succeeds

Before the 1940's, Western Bluebirds were a common sight in places like Edgewood .
After WWII, large-scale building development seriously impacted the ability of these avians to reproduce. Back in the 1960's and 1970's, it was rare to spot a bluebird around here.

In the 1970's people across the western United States, began efforts to bring bluebirds back. Edgewood is one of a number of places where nesting boxes help this effort. There are currently twenty three nesting boxes for Western Bluebirds in the area of Edgewood Preserve. Bluebirds nests are monitored by Friends of Edgewood volunteers in conjunction with the Sequoia Audobon Society. In 2013, 77 baby bluebirds were born in nests their parents built in park bluebird boxes.

Daydreaming About Summer in the Land of Fruits and Nuts

Folks used to think fruits and nuts when they thought of California. Now when I tell people where I'm from, they think silicon.

Still, even in Silicon Valley, which is much cooler than the great Central Valley of California,  we still grow 'em. Both damson plums and walnuts  grace my yard and serve the local population of birds and squirrels, not to mention the occasional raccoon, possum or skunk, well.

If we're really lucky we even get a few.

Native Californian on a Field Trip (Hiking San Luis Obispo)

Hiking Madonna Mountain last weekend, I didn't actually get a chance to check out the appropriate feathers, but I would guess this gal was a red-tailed hawk, simply because we have so many of those beauties in CA.

Whether or not that's her moniker, she knows her status. She's a real Californian, born and bred.

No need for an audio book, cell phone, or Xbox for this native. She simply rides the thermals, and enjoys the field trip.
